Measures of central tendency what"s the typical or average value. Mode the most frequently occurring value in a variable. Can be used for nominal level variables is the only measure of central tendency that can be calculated at the nominal level. You can calculate mode for any level of variable. Median value where half of the cases fall above and half the cases fall below. Ex: grades received in a class are f,d,c,a,d,d,f,f,c,a,a,a,b,b,b, ect. Take all the grades recei(cid:448)ed a(cid:374)d put the(cid:373) i(cid:374) order . If you number those, c is the letter in the middle point of the data and there is a c on either side, making it the median. Mean (aka. the average) add up all the values then divide by the number of cases. Can only be used on interval or higher variables. Nice because it uses all the values in a case. Better to use median or mode if there are outliers.
