Document Summary

Law is about rules and the regularity of behavior. Laws help make the universe more understandable to us. Laws created by human beings serve to complicate matters. Natural laws such as gravity are consistent and do not require enforcement by humans to keep them occurring. Humans possess free will and they can deviate from human laws, which are not naturally enforced. Societal laws have developed over time, through custom and codification. There are two types of laws: customary law and legislation. Customary law is gradual and has no set starting point; it stems from societal traditions and customs. Codifying is not the same as legislation; codification is more of an attempt to record the consensus of the community. Customary law still exists in canada, known as common law. Common law stems from canada"s british inheritance. Laws in medieval england varied from town to town. The king appointed judges to create common law for all of britain.
