Document Summary

Three main categories of therapy: insight therapies, behaviour therapies, biomedical therapies. All forms of therapy involve: therapist (provides treatment, client (receives treatment) All therapies assume that trusting relationship will develop. Within the context of that relationship clients will discuss what they feel, what they think and what they do openly and honestly. In the context of this relationship, the client will feel better and their morale is going to go up. An important aspect is the client making a commitment to change, that is they commit to doing things differently then they have been doing up to this point. Just deciding to seek therapy is a commitment to change that they therapist will foster. All these principles apply to good supportive relationships in general and therapists are in the business of providing consistent caring environment. Therapy is conducted within an ethical framework in which only approaches that have received empirical support will be used.
