Sakyamuni buddha lived between 600-500 bce, lived to be 80 years old. Buddhism and jainism were understood as unorthodox systems. Don"t accept the authority of the vedas, the varnas system. Buddha came from a people called the sakya clan. The buddha refers to him after his enlightenment/awakening = nirvana. He is also called siddhartha (accomplished goal), mission accomplished. Tathagata (the one who comes and goes), one who came into the world of rebirth (samsara), and escapes samsara. Gautama (derived from the family name) (joe, bill, etc) That he would become either a great king or a religious leader. His father is the king of the sakya clan. Wants his son to become a great king. He attempts to steer the buddha to that goal. Tries to seduce him into the world, hides from him everything that would make him renounce. Hides old and sick people from him. Wants him to believe the world is made to satisfy any possible desire.
