Lecture 3: renunciation: the abandonment of possessions including social station, abandon social status, class, geographical region, familial ties, extreme renunciation, the ritual of renunciation, abandonment of all rituals. Rituals of worldly prosperity: duties to perform rituals cease, marriage considered dissolved, debts are dissolved, properties distributed among heirs, twice born householder (son) makes offering for 3 generations ahead. Great grandfather: formal ritual can be negative and positive. Negative: recitation of the call , meaning a person has renounced. Positive: assuming new identity, rebirth of the renunciate, adoption of 5 possessions, staff used for support and pierce the enemies as they approach him. Abandon creature comforts: cant follow regular/same routes, choose where to go randomly cant choose a place to go. Cant ask direction: specific destination, don"t want to be recognized, don"t spend more than 1 night in village and more than 5 nights in city, exception is the rainy season (june-september)
