RELS 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Baudhayana Sutras, Apastamba Dharmasutra
Document Summary
Lecture 2: vedic worldly prosperity, worldly prosperity is entirely denied by renunciation, highest goal is heaven. Is understood as a different world and is in total absence of pain: post vedic- renunciation, renunciation gives up all worldly possessions, highest ideal is renunciation, highest goal is moksa. Liberation: tension between the two, can"t do both of these things at once, at a theoretical level they are incompatible, has to be a balance. Worldly prosperity ideal continues to coexist with the renunciation ideal and compete with it: society has to reconcile with both, people are encouraged to pursue both of these. Doesn"t except asrama system: baudhayana 500-200bce. Present original formulation as view from an opponent (baudhayana agrees with this) think this is the wrong view. Claim householder asrama is the only legitimate and justified one by the vedas: vedas endorse procreation. Doesn"t accept asrama system: apastamba 450-350bce.
