Control vs learning: recall sutherland believed that learning of deviance is variable. Consequently, he and other learning theorist, argued that control is constant in individuals. By contrast, control theorist believe that learning is constant, and control is variable. Control theorists would argue that such grouping simply shoes that deviants seek out others who are like them. That is, bird of a feather flock together. Important: conformity is the norm in the transitional zone and have the highest amount of deviance. Self-control theory: put out in 1969, in 1990, gottfredson and hirschi put forth a self-control theory of crime and deviance, this is not the same as the original social control theory put forth by hirschi alone in 1969.
