SOCI 353 Lecture 9: SOCIFEB9th
Document Summary
A city isn"t worth anything unless it is growing. Everything in a city is about growth. Community is hard to maintain in a big city. More calculating, thinking of things in numbers. Cities don"t actually destroy communities, rather they strengthen them. Communities and neighbourhoods are seen as different things. Just because you don"t know your neighbour doesn"t mean that the community isn"t strong. Sampson - effects of neighbourhoods on people who live there. In well off neighbourhoods, the networks look different from a power neighbourhood. Wealthy neighbourhoods - everyone talks to one another. Would be in much better position if something happens. Mark granovetter - bonding ties, strong and intimate connections among a tightly knit group or community. Bridging ties, weaker ties where information can be exchanged between otherwise unconnected networks. We want to live in the neighbourhoods that are close, emotionally attached. Strengths and weaknesses are defined by the number of common ties shared by 2 actors.
