Individuals are naturally inclined to seek pleasure (egoistic) Leads to social disorder & chaos, individuals will live in fear of each other. Natural theorists: law is a set of ethical principles. Natural law theory explains rational foundations for moral judgment. Notion of morality doesn"t need to enter into the definition of law. Immoral law is still law (valid and should be applied), but is bad law. Basic rules found in all societies (social norms) Move away from metaphysical social values, towards everyday practices. Specific to what people should do/how people should behave. Includes large bodies of law, adjudication to decide if primary rules have been broken.
