SOCI 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Dependent And Independent Variables, Stamen, Homicide
Document Summary
We know our world by five means: A theory is a set of claims about what exists in our social world and the inter connections amongst phenomena. An ideology is a set of beliefs and inter connections that one holds despite evidence to the contrary. The scientific approach demands that we engage in systematic research to test or generate theories. Inductive research (observation -> generalization -> theory) Deductive research (theories -> hypotheses -> observations) Correlations refers to the property of being connected. That is, in order to meet the demands of causality, two variables must be connected. (together but one is not caused by the other) Just (cid:271)e(cid:272)ause t(cid:449)o thi(cid:374)gs o(cid:272)(cid:272)ur arou(cid:374)d the sa(cid:373)e ti(cid:373)e does(cid:374)"t (cid:373)ea(cid:374) that it related to the crime/cause. Temporal sequence refers to the proper order of things. In order to say one thing causes another, it must occur before the other. Relationship must be non-spurious in order to meet the demands of causality.
