SOCI 327 Lecture 2: SOCI 327 1-2
Document Summary
Identify major agencies of the criminal justice system. Be able to explain why there are several definitions of crime. There are three major agencies in the criminal justice system. The correctional system- the agency responsible for dealing with criminals after they have gone through the court system. There is much discussion about the definition of crime. Legal definitions- laws outlining what is illegal in society and what actions are pursued by the criminal justice system. Two commonly used legal definitions of crime. A crime occurs when a law is broken. A crime only takes place when a person has been deemed guilty of a crime and punished accordingly. Problems understanding our cjs using these definitions exist. Not every individual who violates the law is caught and punished. Many criminal acts aren"t prosecuted even when identified by the authorities. No analysis about why some acts are dealt with formally and others informally.
