SOCI 327 Lecture 2: Introduction — Part 2
Document Summary
Criminal behaviour is not always self-evident as one might expect. Reiman and leighton note that most americans have admitted to engaging in crime, but there exists class and racial bias in the administration of crime. Pointed out in a survey including 10 000 americans. Americans were asked on a randomly drawn survey if they have done a crime in which they would"ve been persecuted. There are more laws in society making it easier to offend. Media can be accessed illegally, so the number might"ve gone up. Point out that only 9% of americans said they have not done a crime in which they would"ve got a prison sentence. There was no sampling skew in this study. Reality: when we look at who is punished or is in prison, it is not the 91%. The system tends to catch some people more than others.
