Immigrants hear a reputation of indigenous persons from the dominant culture (white: typically takes 10-15 years for new comers to settle in. Immigrants face systematic oppression, discrimination: hierarchies, stratified by class, ethnic background, even white canadians are not equal, race makes a difference by how people interact and view you, people should not personalize actions, over come hardships through privilege. Markers of identity: geography, race, ethnicity, gender, social class, age, religion, sexual orientation, abilities, education. Assimilation model: education as a tool for integration and assimilation, student diversity not reflected in teaching and learning, ex: leave your diversity at the door (become one culture) entitled to you beliefs outside the classroom but not inside. Liberal, multicultural model: encourages difference and diversity, it focuses on the exotic the way that they were before, not on how they are today, focus on individual knowledge and attitudes, societal change will follow.
