Aging in a Canadian and Cross-National Perspective
Demography studies: birth, fertility, and death.
Count- # of older people in the population
Median- age in the population that splits the population at 50%.
Proportion- Percentage of population that is composed of older adults.
Birth rate- number of births per 1000 women in the population.
Age specific birth rate- the number of births in a given age group per 1000 women in a
population.
Fertility Rate- the number of children that a hypothetical female would have over the course of
her reproductive lifeif she experienced the age specific fertility rates observed in a given year.
Death rate- how many people are dying per 1000 individuals
Infant mortality- deaths in individuals under 1 in 1000 individuals
Dependency Ratio- assumes that individuals over 65 will be dependent on others. The
proportion of adults 65+ to those age 15-64
Total Dependency Ratio- combines children and older adults.
Prospective Aging- contextualizing aging in terms of a nation's remaining life expectancy.
Understanding how aging may vary across cultures. 15 years before typical end of life is termed
late life. Leads us to reconsider when ‘late life’ begins.
Demographic Transition***- lower fertility and increasing life expectancy, leading to greater
population aging. Stages: (1) High fertility and high mortality, very young population (2) high
fertility is maintained, while mortality declines, still relatively young society. (3) Fertility declines
and mortality further declines- population starts to get older (demographic transition) (4) Low
fertility and mortality- low population growth, high concentration of older adults ex Japan.
By 2025, the number of deaths will exceed births, immigration should sustain population
increase.

Why do we see this demographic transition?
Fertility, Immigration, Mortality. Fertility is the biggest factor.
Decrease in fertility+increase in longevity leads to demographic transition.
Why do we see this ‘baby bust’ greater freedom for women- human rights like birth control,
positions in the workplace. This is a concern becasue the fertility rate has dropped below the
replacement rate, drpos number of young people, increases number of old people. Population
aging increases. Immigration should help the replacement rate, but it cannot fully make up for it.
Death rates are dropping because more people are livng past childhood ex. Knowledge about
peanut allergies, vaccines.
Education, housing, sanitation have led to people living longer.
