Stressful period on cow: calving, change in pen, diet change . Greatly impacts future milk and repro performance. Clinical acidosis below ph 5; damage to rumen (scaring), acid burn. Displaced abornasum like colic; twist in stomach. Difficult calving in relation to feed worst for skinny cows) Removed from cows within a day or two after calving. Cows will lay on calves, if needed cow will be milked and it be bottled to calf. High in nutrients, fats, protein (vitamin e & keratin). Quality: total igg antibodies >50g/l, low bacterial count. Quickly: earlier the better, before 6-8 hours. Lec #5 dariy industry: restricted vs. accelerated vs. Libitum: ~10% vs. 14% vs. 16-24% of bw (body weight, replacer vs. whole milk vs. waste milk, warm vs. cold, pail vs. nipple/bottle (nipple bypasses the rumen, manual vs. robotic, others. First feed palatable, sweet, gets the animals to eat feed: rumen development. Target 1. 5 kg intake before weaning: about 65 kg or ~8 wks.
