Brown dog affair was a political controversy about vivisection in england. Bayliss and starling famous physiologist who taught medical students at university of. Bayliss carried out an illegal dissection of brown terrier dog for an audience of medical student, claiming it was properly anaesthetized, but in reality it was conscious and struggling. Bayliss sued the activist for libel and won 250,000. Anti vivisectionists commissioned a bronze statue of the dog as a memorial but medical student vandalized it and riots in the streets- known as the brown dog riots. Battersea council removed the statue in 1910 and destroyed it. A new one was revealed nearly 70 yrs later. 50-100 million animals used roughy in lab each yr, us 20 million, canada- 2 million.
