Lecture 8: unique worldwide: introduction of animal"s dignity in legislation in ch (2008, article 3 of the swiss animal welfare act, dignity: inherent worth of the animal that has to be taken into account when handling it. If any stress imposed on the animal cannot be justi ed by overriding interests, this constitutes a dis-regard for the animal"s dignity. Consciousness (philosophy: consciousness in terms of qualia, how things feel, ex. the soft feeling of sheep hair, coat on my skin. Physical substrate of consciousness: behavioural correlates of consciousness, neural correlates of consciousness, neuroanatomy, subcortical structures, cerebral cortex, neurophysiology. What did we discuss so far : we are taking an ethical standpoint of granting animals the bene t of doubt. What to assess: measures of the environment and resources, welfare inputs , resource based measures, measures of the animal"s responses, welfare outputs , outcome based measures.
