FEB 7TH LECTURE 7
Constructing deviance: What does it mean?
o Drinking and driving example
o We keep work away from entertainment leading to ppl drunk driving
EXAMPLES:
- street crime
- Cooperate crime: we don’t see this as a major problem
- Bullying: social problem being constructed over time (campaign,
and social attention towards bullying)
1. What are some ppl and issues considered a problem while others aren’t?
2. Why are some ppl and issues considered a certain kind of problem?
Blumers “social problems as collective behaviours”
- Stated to stop coming up with solutions to problems (that’s not the
job of a sociologist)
- Need to make something a problem
- When we analyze a problem (show up late to research, after the
problem has occurred we try to solve it)
- How we analyze a problem (things are only problematic when we
define them as such)
His suggestion? Theoretical framework
Thesis of the book is the process of what becomes deviant and defined as
a social problem is always social
