Soc 2070 Soc Deviance
Jas
Deviance is anything society condemns or rejects
Norm violation
Deviance violates social norms
A characteristic and quality that violates behavioral standards/expectation
Impractical jokers is about norm violation (deviant from what normally would happen)
Critique:
The issue of oatie osesus
Our mutual understanding of deviance can be different so it brings a consensus on what
is normal vs not
Objectivist theories
Eg Meto’s anomie, differential association, strain
There are inconsistencies…oo sese is appealig, thee’s a patialit of sotig
hat is deiat ad hat is’t  it akes thigs eas ad helps ogaizig oo
sense
Pehaps deiae is’t a characteristic/quality?
Subjective theories
Deviance is subjective its what u see and how u interpret it
This has ipliatios o ho e see it ad hat it is it’s a lael o tpe of udestad
to the term)
No ojetiis thee’s othig aout the at of killig that akes it deiat killig i
different context is okay like military but homicide (the act) is not deviant bc if it was it
would be seen the same way as a police man killing
A perception/interpretation applied to the phenomenon
How do phenomena come to be interpreted as deviant? What social processes are
involved?
Maijuaa use… hat poesses take plae to sa if this is deiat o ot?
How would a sub. Approach examine drinking and driving? MADD changed the way we
thik aout dikig ad diig  that’s the easo of deaths
Ho ould a su. Appoah eaie tattooig? Thees ee a fudaetal shift …goe
from being part of a gang if u have a tattoo to being more socially acceptable
Labeling theory, conflict theory most important subjective approach in text (deviance
dance)
Critiques:
So is nothing truly deviant? Its just a matter of perception? Ex. Child abuse is a
matter of opinion
Blending subjective and objective
Hybrid approach

Deviance is something that which violates social norms (objectivist assertion) Ex. But
I also realize that those norms are a product of social relations (they are socially
constructed)
Theories of deviance
Recall: a set of general propositions meant to explain social phenomena
Objective subjective and in bw
Micro macro and in bw
social control:
deviance and social control
most forms of deviance will elicit social control (police react to certain kinds of deviance
o a dit look fo paets if u do’t do soethig ight
formal social control: efforts made at an institutional level
spiritual theories
holy inquisition (non believers)
witch hunts…oe ho iolate os feiiit doestiit appeaae
tortured killing to rid them of deil’s influence
spiritual theories less common today but still here, heinous acts and intimations of evil
always makes some assumptions that the origin of deviance lies within the individual ex
hes possessed …this eludes the lage sale of poles ad the ifluee of othe
things in their life
we are capable of beh. (bad) w/o devils
Lecture 2 -
Positivism
Believed these things could be measured, dealt with and observed (deviant)
Durkheim
Approached soiet …ho ell the soial sste is interconnected if it is’t
integrated well then it leads to deviance
Deiae aises out of a soial sste hee those pats ae’t itegatig so
well
Functionalism and the social system
Deviance is functional (4 reasons)
1. Mechanical vs organic solidarity
To understand origins of social beh. Take a look at transitions and development
of social system from less complex to more complex
Mechanical is less complex: social order emerges as sameness, its orderly bc the
ppl are very similar in what the value and how they think
Every once in a while someone will break from the group and do their own thing
As we industrialize the system begins to change, ppl are not as differentiated by
task usually but the degree of the division of labour increases and ppl gain

2. Anomie and the great depression
“oiet a’t e full itegated ad ould’t sho thei skill sets to soeoe ho
needs them
3. Anomie and the hurricane Katrina
Social system broke down and ppl began to engage w things like theft
4. Anomie and war
If its u out that’s ude attak, thees usuall deiae i soieties ad  soldies
Increases social solidarity
Can be bound together in their mutual dislike for deviant behavior
Determines moral boundaries
Rethink segregation so it facilitates the drive of ethical principles
Tests boundaries and opens door for change
Needing social change so it forces ppl to rethink their ideas
Redues soial tesios: soiet a let off stea
We feel better bc it allows us to vent about the conduct we witness
Futioal does’t ea it’s a good thig
TESTING Boundaries & solidarity
On youtube watching a deviant video theres usually a mutual hate in the comment
section for the deviance people witness
Anomie and suicide
Caused by social problems
Egoistic suicide …ou a udestad the oigis of suiide depedig o ho ppl ae
integrated into society (assessive indiuation)
These ppl ae ofte ueploed ad do’t elog i ogaizatios huh
disconnected from the social system
Sense of meaning comes from integration
Altruistic suicide…eteel itegated to suh a etet that the’re willing to die for a
cause …Japaese pilots oittig suiide  fightig fo thei out
Aoi suiide…when something catastrophic happens to society ppl feel disconnected
and have no roots (the great depression), the system is no longer functioning
Fatalisti suiide…when they believe they have no way out and their every behaviours is
fully controlled they have no sense of motivation so the only way to solve it is to kill
themselves
Genetics and mental illness
Social integrations remain a predictor
Immigrants have lower suicide rates (you might think they have higher rates bc theyre
lost when they come here):
