Predominance of text (over voice: instant messages, chats, emails, voice can reveal age, gender, region, social class, education level etc. Clothes, hairstyle, the way one designs their avatar in sl, creation of landscapes, homes, etc. Chat required avatars be within a certain proximity to one another. Note the debate about enabling voice capabilities. Im allowed communication across virtual distances (in sl and in the actual world, and with people who were logged off) But instant messaging could also be used to have a more private conversation between avatars. Also layered conversation in ways that would not be possible in the actual world. Another example showed im as a form of social control: gossip discourages deviant behaviour, mild form of bullying, discourage people in behaving in ways outside normal conformist behaviours because people don"t like to be gossiped about. Sexuality: not focussed on in coming of age in second life.
