High school was 3 years and was not compulsory for either males or females. Examination hell is the name given to the period where students must rigorously study for university entrance exams. Ronin"s (warriors without a master) also used to describe the kids that didn"t do well on their entrance exams and weren"t accepted to their schools of choice. Cram school is often attended, it helps prepare students for the university entrance exams, usually private businesses, also help students that fall behind.
