A sense of belonging (family, community or nation) Doing (ritual) and feeling (as opposed to reading or thinking) Individual belief and faith are what is important, not scriptures, explanations, and religious philosophies. Many sacred sites and ritual spaces still exist. At home shinto deities and ancestral altars still remain. Neighbourhood shrines and temples are all over the place. There are higher and lower areas of purity, for example there is usually a step up into the house because the higher you are the more pure the area is. Cleaning the floor is more important than cleaning the walls. Deities should always be placed higher up. Annual festival with a portable shrine and ritual procession. Packaged religious ceremonies are chosen as commercialized services. Shinto religion is not something that has always been done, only been done since the emperor did it. Religion does not play a very big role in many weddings.
