The care-taking unit is the family, they look after the family graves. One child successor or the grave site. Takes a lot of time and care to maintain the family altar and grave. The dead who receive no ritual care become homeless souls. Founded by yasuda mutsuhiko, former asahi shimbun journalist. Memorial care resources to continue the conventional death rituals. Grave and grave plots are family based. Preferred caregivers are married adult son and spouse living close to his parents and their ancestral grave. Group 1 (before 1925): high birth rate and high mortality rate society. Group 2 (transitional born between 1925 and 1950): high birth rate and lower mortality rate society. Group 3 (born after 1950): a low birthrate and low mortality rate society. Majority of research participants are from group 2. Established nuclear family households during the 1950s and 60s in metropolitan areas. Have many adult siblings but married with a small number of children.
