Ethnoscience: the collection of methods used in cognitive anthropology. Problem: the use of conceptual categories of western society to describe native society and native understandings. Reproduce cultural reality as it was perceived and lived my members of society. Understanding native conceptual categories = key to this task. Show the culturally specific criteria which the hanunoo classify colour. What dissatisfactions lead to the emergence of symbolic and interpretive. Structural analysis fails to account for the flexible character of social and cultural meaning. The culture and personality school and the cognitive schools: both bodies of theory = quite schematically rigid, neither is sufficiently able to address the increasingly important theoretical problem of social and cultural change. Historical particularism in the boasnian tradition = relative lack of theory. Structuralist theory= culture constrained people more than it served them. Culture= a mental phenomenon but rejected the notion that culture could be modeled like mathematics or logic.
