ASCI 2000 Lecture 2: Intro and first topic introduction
Document Summary
Science under siege (lec 1 was just going over syllabus, etc) The first main discussion point we will cover is the current canadian issue: the death of evidence! Scientists are currently muzzled by government, which affects citizens in their ability to make informed decisions, as well as our environment and public policies. Death of evidence term was created by canadian public scientists in protest to the restrictive government policies. The scientists are not able to speak to the press and therefore the public. These scientists staged a mock funeral (~2000 scientists showed up) for evidence. this funeral was to protest. Government closed down a specific freshwater research facility. facility was basically self sustaining fund-wise. It actually cost government more to shut it down than it did to keep it running. Many are quite suspicious that government is limiting environmental research for their own personal gain, as scientists have the ability to hurt things such as the oil trade.
