There is a bias to the classical throughout art history. It is seen as the epitome of expression of the human spirit. Baroque is neglected and not considered respectable because it was not high renaissance. Hegel inspires wolfflin, especially the relationship between art and history. He compares the renaissance and baroque to make a point about history and artistic imagination. While he focuses on these two periods, formal analysis can be applied to art from all eras. He attacks and tries to get away from the bias of former thinkers. His first major work was renaissance und barock, 1888. He was the author of the civilization of the renaissance of italy (1860). It was about art as an expression of increasing civilization. Wolfflin"s teacher was jacob burckhardt, who also made connections between civilization and art ie. the influence of the moment in which the artist works. In medieval art, realistic representation of the physical world was discouraged.
