Document Summary

Metabolism = breakdown substances to produce energy + synthesis of new substances. The molecule water is vital to life (why?) Water molecule= h2o= 2 atoms of hydrogen (h) and 1 atom of oxygen. 1 (+ve) and 1 (-ve) so this means it is a neutral atom. Difference in number of protons and electrons. The hydrogen has lost 1 electron (-ve) it has a +ve charge: h+ Make a charged ion if you take away the negative charge away. The oxygen atom has 8 protons and 8 electrons i. e. it is a neutral atom. Electrons are shared (they go around the new shape and a bond is formed) A covalent bond is formed in fact two! But the oxygen pulls the ve charged electrons more because of its higher number of protons water is a polar molecule (this is what makes it important) A positive charge on one side and a negative charge on the other.
