Consider large-scale paterns of biodiversity on a global scale and which species are (or are not) present in paricular environments. Understand the major strategies used by ecotherms to survive in the cold. Begin to explore some strategies used by endotherms to survive in the cold. There are lots of diferent ecosystems that exist and lots of diferent variability. Vascular plants are found less in the poles and in the desserts due to water availability. Lichens (non-vascular) exist largely in the arcic can avoid freezing by producing propylene glycol (natural ani-freeze). Mosses are diferent-they are freeze tolerant (within cells) and have the ability to go repair cell walls and go through photosynthesis very quickly at low temperatures. Note the scale is diferent for the birds and mammals, thus relaive distribuion must be considered. The more extreme the climate, the less richness is observed; arcic, desert, mountaintops.
