BIOL 1080 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Blood Sugar, Adipose Tissue, Astrocyte
Document Summary
Precursor for biosyntheic pathways and combusion to produce atp occur simultaneously. Summary of macronutrients (primary fuels) and their storage. When stored into issues, nutrients are built back up into macronutrients. Huge amounts of lipids may be stored in adipose issue. Most energy is stored as triglycerides in our adipocytes (>15kg, equivalent to more than 100,000kcal!) Carbohydrate stored as glycogen in liver (~150g) and muscle (~350g). 30g of glucose is found in the blood 1 day supply. Protein also represents a large potenial energy source (we are about 40% muscle), which represents about 25,000kcal but is protected i. e. used in starvaion 12 day supply. Fats and proteins are considered to be funcional stores, but carbs are not. Energy distribuion varies during absorpive and post absorpive states. Absorpive state (post-prandial: 3-6 hours following a meal, nutrients in bloodstream sustained from intesinal absorpion, nutrients being acively absorbed, insulin is secreted which iniiates cells to take up glucose and thus lower blood sugar levels.
