Document Summary

Ecosystem: a dynamic, interacing, interrelated set of bioic and abioic components in a paricular locaion. Bioic components have evolved with each other and with the abioic components to produce a relaively stable and self-sustaining unit. The physical size can vary greatly as it is a spaial concept with boundaries (forests, coral reefs, individuals) Ecosystems are open systems that are maintained by: (1) the constant low of energy through them (2) materials (c, n, p, k) may enter and leave ecosystems but more typically cycle within them. Detriivores: e. g. worms soil is detritus. Flux = transport of energy/material per unit area per unit ime. Inputs = are exchanges from the surrounding environment into the ecosystem. Outputs = are exchanges from inside the ecosystem to the surrounding environment. An open ecosystem is one that undergoes signiicant exchange with the surrounding environment. A closed ecosystem is one with minimal exchange with the surrounding environment.
