Most ecologists assume that evolving organisms are subject to trade offs. Trade off = a sacrifice that must be made to obtain a certain resource experience, rather than others that could be made or obtained using the same required resources. Trade offs are inherent to life history, demography and resource allocation. Allocation is a big: a unit of energy, materials, or time that an organism uses to do one thing (say, build a defense structure) cannot be used to do something else (say, reproduce) *it takes energy to acquire resources; less energy available to do other things!
