5.Biological Homogenization
- The homogenization of habitat conditions and species around the globe, as a
result of human activity
- Ecological: lost and gained specialization
- Evolutionary: reverse speciation-when you bring species back together after
separation; can have detrimental effects
- Overgrazing: limit species diversity, one form of homogenization
- Fire; hetergenization in nature, homogenizes grasslands and other areas
o Some species are adapting to fire, but once a forest fires becomes
strong enough and hot enough, no life forms survive
- Acid rain: nitrogen pollution biggest form, fertilizing the planet,
homogenizes the planet, some species do well with fertilized but some do not
Case Study: Impact of nitrogen deposition on the species richness of grasslands
- Areas with high levels of nitrogen have reduced diversity by 25%
- Homogenization affects variability
- Every plant falls somewhere in the triangle
- Diversity can be created by adapting to different types of stresses in the
environment; heterogenization important
- Environmental simplification- homogenization contributes to diversity loss
