Charles darwin and alfred wallace: darwin wealthy and privileged, wallace poor and a working stiff, corresponded with each other and had same views about natural selection. Natural selection occurs when: variation in some trait occurs among individuals, variation in the trait among different individuals influences fitness through an effect in the ability to perform some ecologically relevant task: trait . Evolutionary response occurs when: trait values tend to be passed from parents to offspring. 1858: evolution has a mechanism that for the first time generates testable hypotheses! Natural selection is pretty close to being a law in biology. But it requires 2 special conditions: conditions 1 and 2 always cause natural selection to occur in a population: the differential survival and/or reproductive success of individuals, individuals have to differ (or vary) in their traits. Condition 3 is not about natural selection.
