BIOM 2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Common Hepatic Duct, External Anal Sphincter, Mesentery
Document Summary
Biom2000 week 9: unit 8: the digestive system. Functional anatomy of the digestive tract: tubular organ. The mouth: tongue and teeth are used to masticate/chew food, saliva is secreted and contains amylase bringing the digestion of carbohydrates, and music which moistens the food, swallowed food passes into the pharynx. The esophagus: contractions of smooth muscles in the wall of the esophagus move the food to the stomach - peristalsis. Lipid digestion: triglycerides, phospholipids and sterols, bile salts help liid digestion by emulsifying lipids allowing them to be broken down into smaller droplets, enzymes that digest triglycerides and phospholipids are called lipase and are present in pancreatic juices. Carbohydrate absorption: disaccharides breakdown to monosaccharides galactose, glucose and fructose, the absorptive cells of the digestive tract internalize these sugars and eventually diffuse out of the cells into capillaries of the intestinal villi.
