Glomerular filtration contractions: 1st barrier = capillary fenestrae, allow proteins to pass but surrounded by charges which create a barrier, 2nd barrier = glomerular basement membrane. Layer of collagen iv and proteoglycan outside capillary endothelium: barrier to plasma proteins and a defect in collagen iv can produce inherited glomerulonephritis. Inner layer of glomerular capsule composed of podocytes: cell body primary processes foot processes. Two general mechanisms are responsible for renal autoregulation: myogenic constriction of afferent, effects of locally produced chemicals on afferent arteriole, part of tubuloglomerular feedback, specialized cells called macula densa in thick portion of ascending limb. Posterior pituitary secretes arginine vasopressin, which functions as adh in response to as little as 1% increase in plasma osmolarity. Renal clearance: ability of kidneys to remove molecules from blood plasma by excreting them in urine: filtration promotes renal clearance as does secretion.
