BIOM 3090 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Adenylyl Cyclase, Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate, Reuptake
Document Summary
Chapter 8: 93-95: the nervous system has 10 billion+ neurons. Interactions among neuronal circuits mediate functions ranging from primitive reflexes to language, mood and memory. Neuroanatomy: nervous system -> divided to peripheral nervous system and central nervous system, peripheral: all nerves traveling between the central nervous system and somatic/visceral sites. Further divided into autonomic and sensory/somatic nervous system: central: includes the cerebrum, diencephalon, cerebellum, brainstem and spinal cord. It relays and processes signals received from the peripheral nervous system. Responsible for perception (sensory, auditory and visual processing). Anatomy of the pns: autonomic nervous system (under pns) regulates involuntary responses of smooth muscle and glandular tissue. Autonomic nervous system: autonomic nerve fibers interact with their target organs by a two-neuron pathway. First neuron: originates in brainstem/spinal cord and is known as a preganglionic neuron. Preganglionic neuron synapses outside the spinal cord with a postganglionic neuron that innervates the target organ.
