BIOM 4090 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Antithrombotic, Hyperlipidemia, Anticoagulant
Document Summary
Blood disorders: conditions related to blood coagulation or other components of the vascular system. Hemostasis: process that keeps the blood uid and clot-free in normal vessels and forms a localized plug in injured vessels. An injured blood vessel must induce the formation of a blood clot to prevent blood loss and allow healing. Clot formation must remain localized to prevent widespread clotting in intact vessels. Goal: prevent prolonged hemorrhage & spontaneous thrombosis. Formation of a localized clot at the site of vessel injury is accomplished in four temporarily overlapping stages: vascular spasm or localized vasoconstriction. Damaged vessel immediately constricts to reduce blood ow to limit blood loss. Response due to secretion of endothelium-derived vasoconstrictors i. e. endothelin. Sympathetic & local factors (i. e. thromboxane) are also released, imitating myogenic properties in the vessel wall & induces smooth muscle contraction. Biom*4090*de w18: primary hemostasis initial plug formation. Platelets are activated to form the initial plug.
