Document Summary

Cancer is the second leading cause of death world-wide and the incidence is expected to rise dramatically over the next two decades. The canadian cancer society also publishes statistics every year regarding the incidence and mortality amongst men and women. Currently, 64% of people diagnosed with cancer will survive more than five years (canadian cancer society). Therefore, despite the fact that the incidence of cancer is on the rise, treatment and diagnostic tools are also advancing which allow for better survival rates. In this unit we will discuss surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and other pharmaceutical agents that are used to treat cancer. The goal of anticancer drugs is to destroy the cancer cells. Single drug or combination drug therapy can be used alone or in addition to surgery and radiation. Below is a flow chart that highlights the classes of anticancer drugs that are available.
