BOT 2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Chromatography, Drug Discovery, Herbarium
Document Summary
The study of people-plant relationships, multidisciplinary eld encompassing ride range of research areas incl, taxonomy, nutrition, pharmacognosy, phytochemistry, ecology, philosophy. Richard evan schultes father of modern ethnobotany : spent extensive time studying & living amongst various indigenous groups to counter prior beliefs (they were primitive) by demonstrating complex nature of their knowledge & value. Bioprospecting: the search for plant and animal species from which medicinal drugs and other commercially valuable compound can be obtained: was practiced without permission, leading to biopiracy for indigenous knowledge. International treaties (i. e. convention on biological diversity, cbd) know protect intellectual property of indigenous people through fear and equitable sharing of any bene ts which may arise from the utilization of genetic resources. Key respondents are members of a community with expertise in the area of study and represent the culmination of generations of plant knowledge within a speci c community/culture. Can take many years, cost millions of dollars at each stage of development.
