BOT 2000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Xylem, Vascular Cambium, Phloem
Document Summary
Use woody & brous plants for fuel, furniture, construction and clothes. Woody & brous plant based industries are a massive component for our ecology, economy, industries and hobbies. Use of plant materials for biofuel is an expanding eld in agriculture & forestry. Secondary tissue since it is initiated later in development after the primary tissues are established (bark is also later established lumped with wood) Bark is considered a separate tissue, produced through a di erent mechanism and has unique characteristics and properties. Wood is often referred to the secondary xylem produced and accumulated in many angiosperms and gymnosperms. Secondary xylem and phloem is produced by the vascular cambium, which is a lateral meristem that develops between primary xylem and phloem, producing new xylem cells on the interior side and new phloem cells on its outer side. Soft woods: any wood obtained from a gymnosperm: produce wood primarily comprised of tracheids.
