Communication: the process by which information is exchanged between a sender and a receiver. Thinking: purchasing manager says to herself i think we"re getting short on. Encoding: keyboards memo to assistant instructing him to order a-40s. Decoding: checks parts catalogue to find out what an a-40 is. Understanding: realizes that he must place an order for flange bolts. Feedback: assistant sends the manager a copy of the order for the bolts- tells the original sender that her assistant received and understood the message. Encoding and decoding may be prone to even more error when the message is inherently ambiguous or emotional. This is because the two parties may have very different perception of the facts at hand. Effective communication: communication whereby the right people receive the right information in a timely manner. Chain of command: lines of authority and formal reporting relationships. Downward communication- from the top of the organization to the bottom.
