CIS 1000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Wide Area Network, Local Area Network, Peripheral
Document Summary
A computer network is a group of computers connected through hardware and software so that they can communicate. Each device connected to a network is called a node, which can be anything from a personal computer to a peripheral device like a printer or a network device like a router or switch. Networks allow connected devices to share information and services with one another, such as files, connected devices (like printers), and their connection to the internet. Computer networks come in a variety of sizes and structures from your local home network to the internet itself. One of the most common ways to classify a network is by distance alone, the common classifications are: wan, man, lan, han, and pan. The internet is the largest of all wans, spanning the entire globe. This network spans a city or large geographical area.
