ENGL 3750 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Nervous Conditions, Homosociality, Eating Disorder
Document Summary
This is a novel that begins in the middle of a process (between land and sea = entering the boat that"s about to cast off) The levels of the ship is space that a literal vertical hierarchy has been applied too. Englishmen stay in 1st class at the top of the ship; the poorest staying at the bottom of the ship in what they call no class. Asks us to think about how fluid identity is and how we cannot treat it as private property. It"s almost as if the novel makes an explicit effort to be confusing, perhaps to symbolize what it would like to be as an emigrant arriving at a new world. The novel never really allows the readers to know the emigrants of the story - only with his white characters does the author take the liberty/effort to really describing.
