Vietnam war (aka 2nd indochina war) began 1954. Vietnam (aka american war) ends 1975 and mass exodus begins. Interesting that it became known as the american war by those actually local to vietnam, interesting naming going on there. This exodus is present in what we all long for that sends tuyen"s (?) family to canada. Interesting how emigration must be accompanied with extreme danger or extreme political situations for others looking in to understand why people are choosing to emigration. Bin (tuyen"s brother) represents the informal economy (he"s a human trafficker) Quy represents the outsider - he doesn"t have status as a person. Refugees perhaps are not part of any nation once they"ve fled and entered into the camps that are sort of liminal spaces. They are being kept without being charged and will never go to trial yet they will continually be held - they are wholly liminal beings.
