Domesticity/domestic space is attached to ideas of home. Clay wants a women who balances him out as a person one that completes him. Hope is more of a partner whereas alice seemingly is a compliment. Alice perhaps makes clay more hyper-masculine in making him wanting to fight for her (against king"s wooing attempts) It seems that kindness is something that men need and something that women can provide for them. Clay values alice by the reasoning that he desires value and knows when he senses value similar to people being able to identify the highest quality diamonds just by looking at it. Efficiency and the ability to manipulate things to make them more valuable was also associated with white men. Sof shows that if women cannot take place in the professional world (the public sphere), then they are not as attractive as those who do.
