Simile: compares two things using like or as. Metaphors: compares two things by saying that one thing is the other. *that woman is the cancer of my dreams and aspirations. Sight: red is the pulsing forehead of your grade six french teacher, about to explode. Taste: red is the first bite into a crisp fall apple. Sound: red is the screech of the library alarm signalling its close. Strong sense of place is a description with all five sense. Use of other characters to evoke the mood of the place. Incidents that bring the sense of place to use. Inner feelings of the character, their expectations and desires, their attitudes. You cannot and should not describe every last detail of an environment. It will be too much for the reader to absorb and will simply muddle your writing. Sometimes an environment or the essence of a place can be best described through imagery, simile or metaphor.
