Rome"s mythic beginnings and histories and creation myth contains a lot of rape! This is a play interested in masculinity not lucrece. Valerius"s songs are the opposite, done by himself or with a lute (instrument sort of like a guitar) Heywood"s rape of lucrece was probably the first play performed in the red. Combines elements of history, tragedy, and comedy together generic mish-mash. Investigates the trauma of rape through the ripple effects it has on males in society. Metatheatrical return of the rape: when the rape is replayed by proxy. So even though theater-goers did not witness rape on the stage, the act is replayed via proxy through the rest of the play and how the characters interact and act following it. This was a theater capable of displaying spectacle and music because of its design. Became known for using music to enhance the play and the atmosphere or feelings trying to be conveyed on stage.
