ENGL 3020 Lecture 25: Bonduca & Rape
Document Summary
This play interrogates the concept of yielding rape making it different from other plays during the time that thought that women could not be raped because if they fought hard enough, they never could be. The rape against bonduca"s daughters happen before the play off stage the inciting atrocity has already occurred by the opening of the play. The play"s motivating prime was the rape that happened before, yet not all the characters agree that this is the fundamental crime of the play (ex. Caratach sees the absolute central prime as when the women disarm the men of the play and that women would dare to do such a thing) In history, no one gave bonduca"s daughters names throughout all of their accounts yet fletcher does this is important. The victim of rape was re-entered into the patriarchal system by becoming wed to their rapist.
