Even when tillage and cropping are carefully managed, field topography may be such that areas of concentrated runoff occur in draws and swales. When this is the case, engineering measures and structures may have to be built to correct or prevent subsequent rill and gully erosion problems. Erosion control structures are generally aimed at modifying the flow pattern (lower velocity, grade and direction) of concentrated surface runoff. Some of these structures are designed to collect water and safely transport it to an outlet. Others are designed to protect the surface from concentrated flows. Some erosion control structures will be permanent while others are temporary. Permanent structures such as grassed waterways, diversion terraces and wascobs are often installed in agricultural fields, while more temporary measures such as sand bags, silt fences, surface mats and rock liners may be more appropriate during construction activities.
