Document Summary

Pre lecture: on friday there will be a guest lecture, introducing us to plant diseases. Cross section of the ash tree demonstrates that female ash borers lay 40 to 70 eggs on the bark of an ash. The larvae bore into the tree layers and feed within the tree and pupate into adults following 1-2 years. The adults chew a d-shaped hole in the bark. Adults emerge in canada between late may and early june. A good indication of the emerald ash borer is a d-shaped hole in trees. As adults they feed on the foliage of ash trees for approximately 1-2 weeks. That adds some extra damage to the tree, however the majority of damage occurs during the larvae stage. One egg is about 1 mm, very tiny and dif cult to see with the visible eye. Pheromones used here are not as long ranging as other species, therefore this pest does not travel very far.
